As Small Island Developing States (SIDS) continue to confront the shared challenges of climate change, economic vulnerability and sustainable development, access to high-quality data has become more than a technical necessity, it is a strategic imperative.
The Geospatial World Forum (GWF) 27 April – 1 May in Amsterdam provided an important platform to advance this agenda, bringing together governments, international organizations, technology leaders and development partners to explore how geospatial information can strengthen decision-making and resilience. For the SIDS Centre of Excellence (SIDS CoE), the Forum represented a significant opportunity to strengthen partnerships and accelerate the development of the SIDS Global Data Hub, one of the Centre’s pillars that fulfil the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS).
Throughout the Forum, discussions reinforced the critical role of integrated geospatial data in supporting evidence-based policymaking, disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, investment planning, and sustainable development. These priorities closely align with the mission of the SIDS CoE to provide SIDS with the tools, partnerships, and knowledge needed to make informed decisions and build long-term resilience.
A key highlight was the dedicated seminar, Building the Data Foundations for the SIDS Centre of Excellence and Global Data Hub, which brought together government representatives, geospatial experts, development institutions and private sector partners to examine how digital infrastructure and data systems can better serve small island developing states. The seminar showcased the vision for the SIDS Global Data Hub as a central platform for integrating environmental, social and economic data to support national planning, SDG monitoring and investment decision-making.
The seminar also highlighted the importance of collaboration. Through engagement with organizations including the SDG Data Alliance, PVBLIC Foundation, Esri and other geospatial leaders, the SIDS CoE continues to build an ecosystem of partners committed to expanding access to data, strengthening national capacities and supporting digital transformation across Small Island Developing States.
Importantly, discussions emphasized that data must move beyond collection to become actionable intelligence. By combining geospatial technologies, interactive mapping and integrated data platforms, the SIDS Global Data Hub will help governments identify development priorities, monitor progress, attract investment and respond more effectively to emerging risks
As the SIDS Centre of Excellence continues to operationalize its programmes, the outcomes of the Geospatial World Forum reaffirm that resilient island futures will be built on strong data foundations. By fostering innovation, strengthening partnerships and expanding access to geospatial information, the Centre is helping ensure that SIDS have the knowledge and digital capabilities needed to implement the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS and drive sustainable, resilient prosperity.
